" Life Has Questions. They Have Answers." - The New York Times
"The career book of the next decade... The 'go-to' book that is read as a rite of passage whenever someone is ready to create a life he or she loves."
- David Kelley, founder of IDEO and author of Creative Confidence.
What exactly is a well-designed life? It's a rich portfolio of experiences, adventures, and failures that teach us important lessons; that result in hardships that make us stronger; that help us know ourselves better; it's a life of achievements and satisfactions.
In Designing Your Life, Bill Burnett and Dave Evans put forth the questions about life that we all ask about one's meaning and purpose in the world; questions such as: How do I find a job that I like or maybe even love?... How do I balance my career with my family?... How can I make a difference in this world?
We all want the answers to these questions. We're just not sure how to go about finding them, or where or how to begin. And we feel that we don't have the tools to find our way.
Designers love questions, but what they really love is reframing questions. The re-framing for the question, "What do I want to be when I grow up?" is "What do I want to grow into?"
This is what Designing Your Life promises to show us - how to find what we want to do now, at any age, and how to answer who we want to grow into tomorrow.
We have a guest speaker!
Chris Dotson, Manager of Learning and Talent and President of GAASHRM will answer questions, such as:
1) How did you figure out what you wanted to do for a living? Was it something that you always knew you wanted to do or was the process more organic?
2) What would you describe as your passion?
3) How important has the act of reflection been in your life?
4) How have you become unstuck (if/when) you have found yourself stuck in your life at a point in time - whether it was you or someone you know...
5) How do you decide to move forward with things (ie. projects, changes, etc.) in life?
You can also read Burnett and Evan's Designing Your Work Life, a life-changing book using the same design thinking - that shows us how to create a job that's meaningful and full of possibility without necessarily changing the job we have!
A bout the authors -
Bill Burnett and Dave Evans successfully taught graduate and undergraduate students at Stanford University and readers of their best-selling book, Designing Your Life (“The Prototype for a happy life.”—Brian Lehrer, NPR), that designers don’t analyze, worry, think, complain their way forward; they build their way forward. And now more than ever, we all need creative and adaptable tools to cope with the chaos caused by COVID-19.
Burnett and Evans’s Disruption Design offers us a radical new concept that makes uses of the designer mindsets: Curiosity, Reframing, Radical collaboration, Awareness, Bias to action, and Storytelling, to find our way through these unchartered times.
Burnett and Evans show us, with tools, tips, and design ideas, how we can make new possibilities available even when our lives have been disrupted (be it globally, regionally, or personally), giving us the tools to enjoy the present moment and allowing us to begin to prototype our possible future.
